My favorite photographer by far!
Nelson is a British born photographer known for his portraits of tribal and indigenous people. Nelson spent his childhood in Africa, Asia and south america which i think influenced his "before they pass" project which is his most famous projects to date where he photographed 35 indigenous tribes around the world. He Also said he was inspired by Edward Curtis who did amazing photographs of native americans.
What genre
are they working in? Nelson is working in the Photojournalism and portraiture genre.
Where would
you normally see their work? Nelson has featured in over 1000 magazines with articles relating to his Before they pass project, nelson also has gallery exhibitions one of which is opening soon.
What
subject matter do they normally shoot? Nelsons subject matter is predominantly people
How does
their work relate to your project? In these images ive chosen Nelsons work has his subjects in their natural surroundings using natural light. All the subjects have an almost serious glance about them which attracted me to the photos as that is a similar glance to how i want my subjects. Also i think the way he portrayed each culture , bringing out the beauty about each indigenous people he shot in their natural surroundings is similar to what im trying to accomplish with the mums. Accepting and realizing beauty within imperfections, within mundane but critical life as a mum or in indigenous life and whats seen as socially frowned upon in this media run world. (i think this makes sense)
What ideas
and techniques will you take into your own work after seeing these images? At first i was gonna keep all my shots indoor but i think it would be a mistake not to take some outside , probably not in the forest at a waterfall though. I will experiment with angles and also while editing i like the effect of these images, contrasty and intense i will take that into post and editing.
